Article before any compressed Air Tool
These are tools driven by compressed air. They are strong, rugged, and powerful. They are also now manufactured for every job around the house.
Air tools, also referred to as pneumatic tools, have several advantages over electric power tools. For one, they offer more torque and power than conventional power tools. They also are generally more durable than their electric counterparts. Finally, they are easy to use. Just plug in your air tool's hose to your compressor and start working.
They do require a separate air compressor that powers your individual air tools. Be sure to match the PSI (pressure per square inch) rating on your compressor with that of your tools. Also, only purchase air-tool hoses that are made for the connection on your compressor. A tight seal between your hose and compressor is critical to prevent air leakage and loss of power.
There is an air tool for almost every job. Some of the more common air tools are:
- Pneumatic drills
- Air grinders
- Pneumatic hammers
- Lubricators
- Air nail guns
- Air paint sprayers
- Pneumatic ratchets
- Air sanders
- Air saws, tire inflators, and pneumatic wrenches.
Before selecting a compressor, carefully consider the unit's horsepower and tank capacity. Units with more powerful motors and larger tanks can generate higher levels of PSI .
There are two main types of compressors available:
Piston-type compressors: Piston-type compressors use a pump to fill a tank. The tank stores the compressed air until it is ready for use. When the air pressure drops below a certain point, the compressor turns back on and increases the pressure. Two-stage compressors create more pressure and are superior for heavy-duty jobs.
Compact compressors: Compact compressors are a air power tool that does not have a tank to store compressed air. Instead, the compressor continues to run while it is providing air pressure. While these models are small and light, they do not provide enough pressure for many applications and are generally used as propellants for paint, glue or lubricant guns.

what kind of air compressor would i need to paint a my civic?
i have all my other tools to sand and paint my civic, i am missing just one. can anyone tell what typ of air compressor would i need to paint my car. if possible could you paste some links to some websites.
I can tell some of yall aint painted anything and don't know much about air compressors.
You don't need or want 150 psi, lol
Most air tools are designed to run at 90 psi or less
All of my pain guns needs between 8 and 12 psi at the tip. To get that, I need about 38-45 psi at the tail stock of gun.
I run my compressor reg. at 100 psi (due to pressure drop in 125' of hose), and then have a second reg on the paint gun which I turn down to the 38-45 psi.
To really keep up with your painting and not run out of air vol. You need a shop ype air compressor.
The CFM is alot more important figure to look at than psi, or HP.
Min to paint with is a compressor that can put out 11 cfm or more @ 90 psi.
If you want to do the full car at once then you need a tank size that can keep up with you, so you aint sitting there waiting on the compressor to catch up and fill the tank after you spray 1/4 of the car.
60 gal tank is min.
So to get a 60 gal unit that puts out atleast 11 cfm @ 90 psi you will need a 220 volt unit
I myself run a 60 gal, 11.3 cfm @ 90 psi ingersal rand compressor
Husky and campbell housfeild feild also makes pretty good units that fits the bill
You will also need a good reg. at the compressor's outlet, about10-25 foot of line, then a good water trap/filter
