is there such thing as an AC to AC grid tie inverter?

I know you cant plug an inverter straight into a wall and feed the grid but is there a way to grid tie with ac power, I know they make DC to AC but is there an AC to AC grid tie

Absolutely. It is how DC high voltage transmission (HVDC) is carried out, and it can be used and experimented with low voltage apps. You can even tie two systems with different frequencies. The flow of power is controlled by delaying the firing angle of the receiving end viz-a-viz the network frequency.
