Is it possible to wire up 2 generators in succession?
For example, if you made a vertical axis wind turbine like this:
http://greenterrafirma.com/diy-vawt.html
would it be possible to add a second generator at the top and combine them? (reds to reds, blacks to blacks). If they were both 6v motors, would this then make 12 volts, or would the amps double? What if you made your own alternator via stator coils and rotor and combined it with the DC motor - would that work? Both convert to AC, so rectification would be done after they're combined if I want to charge batteries, but is this possible?
Yes it is possible to combine 2 generators. The link goes to a very basic experimental wind turbine system that is fine for a home use unit. If you are using dc generators or car alternators the system is easier to design for home use. If they are AC units, then the 2 generators must synchronized and balanced for operation. This is an engineering concern that takes some calculations and planning to accomplish. The link had a concern about the wind speed needed to start the generators. This can be overcome by use of a solenoid that engages the drive belts when the turbine speed is sufficient. This also needs some design but it is simple to achieve.
